Welcome to the
1st Symposium Too Old For The ICU?
There has been a steady increase in the group of very elderly patients that is admitted to our ICUs.
These elderly patients have specific age-related problems, different presentation of diseases and, more importantly, other views on what constitutes appropriate treatment.
Undeniably, caring for older patients frequently poses ethical and practical challenges both prior to and during ICU admission. Decision making requires an in-depth understanding of ageing and its consequences on normal organ function, together with close communication with family and other caregivers.
During a two-day symposium we will highlight several of these aspects. You will be asked to actively participate in discussions with an international panelmembers and audience. Several knowledgable researchers in the field of elderly patients will present their study results and discuss with you what future research is needed to improve the care of this important patient group.
